What on Earth is: numerology?

This is the first in what I hope will become a series of posts about various movements and practices that may seem completely alien to many, but seem incredibly enlightened to those that follow it. First up is Numerology...

Now I had never heard of numerology until recently, but after a chance sighting of a facebook post about numerology I was intrigued, and more than a little confused.

This is the first piece about Numerology that I ever saw;

"Today is 4/"11"/2014=#22 This day is special numerologically speaking in many spectrums. It is up to each of you to recognize in your own way as you read this what is means for each of you. First, I hope lots of you had fun yesterday with the #3 energy. That was way called for with the coming of this day that combines almost all 3 master numbers. 11, 22, and even the 15/6. Most do not know this but the 6 is the lower cousin of the more powerful #33. So in many ways, they all are here in present in our beings today. So now we have this. 11. Awareness, 22. Structure, and 33. Transformation. Make no mistake about it. There are higher energies at work today. Weather could be effected too with the 7 year. Regardless, I will take the high road, and say, "Fix That Which Is Broken All Around You". This can be inside of you, or those which you see which is outside of you."

I believe the exact words I thought to myself were "what the balls is this guy on about?" A quick Google later and I was still none the wiser, so I took it upon myself to try and piece all this together and regurgitate it in a way that won't make me sound like an absolute lunatic (spoiler alert, I don't succeed!).

One of the many charts used in numerology

Numerology is similar to astrology, assigning importance to numbers (particularly dates) and making predictions about what will come true during the day. It's been around since the time of Pythagoras, and has made its way across the entire world. With the ever increasing dependence of us on technology, numbers are becoming more and more important; so what's the deal with this?

It's essentially an extension of the incredible ability of humans to recognise patterns and ascribe meaning to these patterns. Numerologists believe that patterns in your birthday, phone number, address, name and the current date can give a great insight into your personality and life trajectory and by becoming aware of these patterns you can make the most of your time on this Earth. That's what the Numerologists say though, while numbers can describe a lot about how the universe works, most reasonable people would quite likely be sceptical about the significance of the relationships between your birthday and your name; completely unrelated right? Not to Numerologists, let's dig deeper...

Apparently the important numbers are 1-9 and then 11, 22 and 33, for whatever reason. These last 3 are the master numbers, but we'll get to that later. First lets start with how the single digits work. First we'll start with words and names, let's take the word love, as that's the word that numerology.com uses in their explanation; okay so you assign each word the number it holds in the alphabet, so with love you get 12, 15, 22 and 5. Then 12= 1+2 which = 3 and so on, when you add these numbers together you get 18, which then goes to 9. It just so happens that 9 represents generosity, self-sacrifice and concern, seems pretty neat right? So lets take a different word, say anus. anus gives us 1, 14, 21 and 19 that gives us 1, 5, 3 and 1 (10=1+0=1) totalling 10, which then goes to 1. This is what the number 1 means in numerology;

"The 1 is a doer, a powerful force that produces results and does not allow anything or anyone to limit its potential. The 1 is aggressive, a necessary energy for creating and producing. The 1 is always in the forefront: a spearpoint directing and leading others. The shape of the number 1, just like the shape of all other symbols, reflects its meaning; it walks upright with pride and purpose. Strong, determined, unwavering and with specific goals in mind, the 1 can turn dreams and ideas into reality. It pushes obstacles aside or simply drills right through them.
The 1 grows, transforms and improves in perpetuity, precisely the way Mother Nature does. After all, nature's primal force and most basic building block is the number 1. Nature knows no mercy and its cruelty can be heartbreaking. However, it knows balance and gives life indiscriminately and without judgment. Scientists sometimes compete with nature, genetically altering fruits or breeding bugs for specific purposes. An understanding of nature teaches us that this is never a good idea and almost always produces unexpected backlashes. The number 1 has a similar built-in perfection and balance; you can force a change here or there, but negative repercussions are likely.
The 1 tends to have a simple, straightforward view of life and its many complexities. It trusts its own ability to separate right from wrong. It doesn't waste time on abstract ideas or anything else that isn't in line with its pursuit of results. The 1 is no preacher, no philosopher, no spiritual explorer, no dreamer and certainly not an idealist. It is a pragmatist, a ruthless conqueror and a warrior extraordinaire. It is individualistic and independent to a fault. It will attempt to force its values and opinions on you but it won't accept, or even listen to, yours.
The 1 does not hesitate when it senses a need for confrontation. It is jealous and extremely stubborn, but also courageous and willing to try anything new if it sees promise, even at great danger. It is, if you haven't guessed, the most masculine of all numbers. There is a certain quality, a sense of honor and responsibility that demands our respect, and it has a sense of justice that cannot be denied. The number 1 cannot witness injustice without jumping in and setting things straight.
Its purity of purpose is an admirable quality of the number 1. It sees things for what they are and hypocrisy doesn't stand a chance. Befriend a 1 and you have a friend for life. You can poke fun at a 1 and not have to worry about hurt feelings. A 1 has a great capacity for humor, including the self-deprecating kind. If, however, you try to cater to a 1 to win its love or friendship, you'll lose its respect instead. Stand up to a 1 and you may lose the fight, but you'll gain its admiration. If you are in trouble and need help, the number 1 is who you want on your side -- there is no more dedicated protector or braver partner. If you are in love, the number 1 is the most difficult of all lovers: demanding, jealous, confrontational and impatient. If you find yourself in the service of a 1, you will be pushed to the limit, abused at all hours, and incapable of living up to its expectations. But you will also, without a doubt, become the best you could ever be. If the 1 is your enemy, you will be crushed without mercy."
If you yourself are a 1, your happiness and satisfaction will come from your work more than from any other source. And if it was possible for a person to be fully and truly a 1 and only a 1, that individual would be successful and intimidating, as well as extremely unpleasant and dangerous."
Now replace the number 1 with anus and re-read that...
Done? okay, so now you must have realised that these things are clearly pretty bogus, but that doesn't mean they can't be a little bit of fun, much like astrology (most people don't believe in astrology but that doesn't mean you can't have a bit of a giggle in the astrology section of a newspaper). They're a way to make some people feel better about themselves, to feel like they have a connection to the universe in some way and to gain guidance from someone, it just so happens that these qualities we all have inside of us are ascribed to a combination of the arbitrary numbers that are a part of our identity (and some others that are made up).
So what can we determine from Numerology? We can use our birth date, full name and the name that we go by to determine "profound" things about ourselves, including your Life Path number (your life trajectory), your Birth Day number (your personality) and many many others for almost any aspect of your life. So feel free to have a bit of fun with this, but please remember that in the end...it's all just made up.
